This is a topic that I need some help with. Being in sales, I have always been torn between being friendly with the other vendors and competing over sales and therefore income. The reps in my industry see each other often and sometimes must cooperate on/for parts of a particular sale. You get to know their kids ages and their wives names.
I have spoken to some in the industry who believe that being too friendly and cooperative makes you weak. You must realize that they are working to take food off your kids' plate and must treat him likewise whenever there is the opportunity.
Now, I can see why some need reason and motive to go after business as we must. I worry when it is seen by some as a professional virtue - fighting so hard to win win win. This goes back to the sports analogies. But, without some of that attitude, can you be effective as a sales professional?
Deacon Krenson said it well in his talk to the CBL back in October: Are we the same person at work that we are at Church or on the weekends?
I believe the perspective taught in many a sales course: Keep your focus on providing benefit to the customer and the sales will take care of themselves.
I would appreciate some other perspectives on this subject.
